Spacer washers are used to position the cutters on a cutter drum assembly as fitted to concrete and asphalt planing and grooving machines. They are manufactured under quality controlled conditions from heat treated, hardened steel for long life and reliability. Spacer washers  are a low cost item but with a crucial role to perform. If you fit sub standard spacer washers to your cutter drum assemblies you will quickly become aware of the problems created and the costs involved.

Soft or poor quality washers will quickly wear the bore and expand in width to jam the cutters and prevent their free movement. This will result in uneven wear and premature failure of the cutters as well as greatly reducing cutter performance. Often this accelerated wear and loss of performance is accompanied by high levels of vibration. It is important that you fit the correct number of washers to allow the cutters to rotate freely for uniform wear and also to allow the cutters to be thrown out with full energy and without restraint. This action is essential for optimum performance.

As the spacer washers wear they can also allow the cutters to move more on the cutter shafts and also then allow the cutters to rock over on the cutter shafts. The nett result being rapid wear on the cutter shafts and cutters as well as increasing the possibility of cutter breakages from sideways forces. Cutter shafts and cutters are far more expensive to replace than spacer washers - fit poor quality spacer washers and your cutter shaft and cutter consumption will rise - not to mention the wasted downtime replacing them in the middle of a contract.

By varying the number of spacer washers fitted between the cutters you can change the performance of the cutters - increasing or decreasing the impact and the effect on the floor / wall. When removing soft coatings or adhesives by fitting additional spacer washers can reduce the build up of heat and help prevent the cutter assembly from becoming clogged. Additional spacer washers will also increase the loading on each cutter helping to increase the force of impact.
